I’m Tara. I’m the quiet one in a group. Most often it’s because I’m too busy listening and watching, picking up on all the ism’s that a make a person unique. I’ve always been an observer and a feeler, so my journey into photography and filmmaking was a natural progression. I still remember the first time I felt the inspiration to create an image. I was 13 years old. I was in my room, watching the light and shadows dance across my wall as the sun lowered in the sky. I ran and grabbed the first camera I could find - the dinkiest point and shoot digital camera you could think of - and snapped a picture of my shadow splayed across the wall. Since then, I’ve never stopped chasing light and the shadows that follow.
When I’m not out photographing the world around me, I’m probably at the dog park with our two black labs or curled up with a book and our kitty on my lap. I’m currently trying to master the art of the thriving houseplant. I’ll let you know how that goes. I have a wandering spirit that doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. I grew up with musicians for parents. I like to think they’re the reason I live a creative life and why I see beauty in everyone.
We are Caleb and Tara Johansen. We are photographers and filmmakers. We spend our lives chasing light and the thrill that comes with attempting to communicate the beauty we encounter when we create images with our couples. We are artists exploring our favorite subject: you. and this funny little thing called love.
We approach image-making in the most honest way that we can. We don’t want to craft some story that isn’t yours. We want to document and accentuate the perfect romance that is already revealing itself right in front of us. “Storyteller” is a term that gets thrown around a lot in our industry, but what we do is more about finding and curating the story that’s already there. We seek out those genuine moments of connection, beauty, and interaction and do our best to capture them in the most stunning way we can.
It’s still baffling to us how our job grants us this window into some of the most important and intimate moments of people’s lives. We feel blessed and honored that our couples give us the opportunity to create the images that will last them a lifetime. Images that begin the family photo album that keeps on growing, or the wedding film that can transport a long married couple back to the moment it all began.
We find you to be quite inspiring. Let’s make some art happen together.
I’m Caleb. I’m usually one of the louder ones in a group. I love to make people smile and the best way I’ve found to do that is to explore life openly with those around me. I love getting to know people and collaborating with them to create something lasting. Whether it be a wedding day or a high stakes commercial shoot, I love the challenge of capturing once in a lifetime moments. The thrill of high pressure moments keep me going. I’ve been exploring life with a lens since middle school and my background is large format film photography. The nature of large format film is that you only get one shot. You have to have all your ducks in a row to make sure your one shot is perfectly exposed, perfectly in focus. This desire for precision has led me to deconstruct my approach and to truly push myself to create something new and different.
I like to spend my downtime either experimenting with a new woodworking project or rereading a Haruki Murakami novel. I love to adventure and experience new places while meeting new people. So let’s get a cup of coffee and chat about life, love and those experiences that get your blood flowing.
